July 1932
Having passed the eightieth milestone of his life quietly and peacefully early on the morning of July 26th, John A. Ullery laid aside his body of flesh and entered into the spiritual. He was the son of Joseph and Ellen Ullery and was the eldest of a family of four children. He was born in Covington, May 2, 1852 and lived most of his life here. He married Miss Emma B. Worley September 4, 1879, and to them were born five children, the two eldest of whom died when quite young. The other three, Joseph C. Ullery of Chicago, Helen of Covington, and Mrs. Florence Wright of Fairfield Ohio, with their mother survive the father. For almost fifty-three years Mr. and Mrs. Ullery lived together in beautiful companionship. After their marriage Mr. Ullery was for about six years Deputy United States Marshall with headquarters in Columbus, O. During that time they lived in Columbus, all the rest of his life was spent in Covington. On his return from Columbus he entered into business and while still in the store he became the first secretary of the Covington Building and Loan Assn. He was also for a time employed in the Citizen's National Bank. About twelve years ago he suffered a sunstroke from which he never fully recovered, gradually growing worse until death came to relieve him. Mr. Ullery was a lifelong Christian, having united with the Baptist church when quite young. After dissolution of the Baptist Church in Covington, he united with the Christian Church and as long as his health permitted he remained faithful in the work of that church. He was always interested in music and was the chorister of the Sunday School for more than thirty years. He organized the first orchestra in the Christian Church. The interest and enthusiasm he aroused in this orchestra created an enthusiasm for music which may have had something to do with the love of music which is one of the characteristics of Covington. One would need to go far to find a more polite and courteous gentleman than was Mr. Ullery. He seemed naturally to know the niceties of courteous thoughtfulness of others and in the home he was most affectionate and thoughtful of his wife and family. While for a long time he has been unable to take much active part in church or civic activities so that we have not been used to associating with him in that way, yet his death renews our memory of the church and he was a deacon up to the time of his death. Besides the wife and children, he leaves to mourn two sisters; Mrs. Lizzie Himes and Mrs. May Cox both of Covington, also two grandsons Tom and Dick Wright.
Mr. John A. Ullery, 80, passed away at his home on East Broadway at six o'clock this morning, after an illness of several years resulting from sunstroke suffered 12 years ago, since which time his health has been gradually failing. Mr. Ullery was active in many enterprises of the village, serving as the first secretary of the Covington Building & Loan Assn., cashier of the Citizens National Bank, chorister for the Christian Church for 30 years, and served as member of the Board of Education. In addition to these and other activities he served as U.S. Marshall for a number of years. He is survived by his widow, one son Joseph Ullery of Chicago, and two daughters, Miss Helen at home and Mrs. Florence Wright of Dayton. Two sisters also survive, Mrs. C. M. Himes and Mrs. J. M. Cox, both of Covington. Funeral arrangements have not been completed at this time.
