Veteran - Civil War - 61st OVI, Company I
Joseph Yingst, Civil War Veteran, Called Long-Time Resident Of This Vicinity Suffered Stroke Saturday. Distinguished War Record.
Joseph B. Yingst, 86, veteran of the Civil War and for many years resident of this vicinity, died at his home, 822 South Walnut St., Troy, Tuesday subsequent to a paralytic stroke suffered Saturday. He had been unconscious since noon Sunday and his death was not unexpected.
Mr. Yingst was born in Dayton, August 19, 1945. As a young man he removed to near Covington where he farmed until the beginning of the Civil War, at which time he enlisted in the 61st O. V. I, Company I. He was the last surviving member of that company at the time of his death. Eighteen years ago he retired from active farming and he and his wife removed to Troy to reside. His wife preceded him in death last April.
Mr. Yingst had a distinguished war record, having participated in many of the well known battles. He received wounds at Gettysburg which kept him confined to Union hospitals. He re-enlisted in 1864 and served until the close of the war.
The decedent was a member of the Greenville Creek Christian Church and was formerly a member of the A. H. Coleman post of the G. A. R.
Four children survive: Mrs. Grace Boehringer, who resides in the Yingst home and cared for her father, Raleigh O. Yingst, Muncie, Ind., George C. of Covington, and Lewis of Piqua; 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at the Wado Schilling Funeral Parlors. Interment in Highland Cemetery.

according to his age, the appropriate year is 1845.
