Colonel Joseph C. Ullery
Last Saturday, Covington laid to rest in beautiful Highland Cemetery, one of her most honored citizens, Col J. C. Ullery. He was born on the old Ullery homestead within the corporate limits of Covington, July 7th 1930, and during his entire life of seventy years, had the interest and welfare of the village at heart. In his lifetime he served his fellow townsmen as Assessor. In 1867 he was sent to the State Legislature, and again in 1874. He was president of the Board Of Education, Covington Special District, for eight years, a trustee of Newberry Township for six consecutive years; a member of the Board of Trustees of Highland Cemetery, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Covington Building and Loan Ass'n; Treasurer of Miami County for two terms, and United States Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio during the Hayes administration. His military service comprises the Captaincy of Co. G., 110th O.V.I. in the Civil War, and a Col. of the 3rd Regiment O.N.G.
Col. Ullery was a man of sterling virtue and integrity, keen judgment and great executive ability. The high esteem in which he was held was manifested last Saturday afternoon, by the large concourse of friends and neighbors from this village , and all parts of the county, present at the last rites in his honor. Langston Post GUAR.., of which he was a life-long member, conducting the services. Rev. J. L. Goodknight, assisted by Rev. W. J. Reynolds, preached an appropriate sermon.
