Miami Union

David Jones, the pioneer, the local poet, historian, and scholar, passed quietly away Thursday morning last at 7:15 o'clock. Although it was generally known throughout the community that he was dangerously ill, the announcement of his death cast a gloom over the people who had known him so long.
Mr. Jones was born on a farm two miles west of Milton , October 4th, 1815, and made Union Township his home the entire period of his life. He well remembered the Stillwater Valley when it was a dense forest, still the home of the red man, and the favorite resort of the deer, the bear, and other wild animals, and found much pleasure in detailing the history of the early settlers. He had an extraordinary gift of memory, and every incident of those early days seemed as fresh in his mind as it occurring the day previous. From a boy he was a close and diligent student, literally devouring every book of worth, that the limited libraries then afforded, and securing the best education the schools could furnish. When about twenty-one years old he took a collegiate course at Earlham College, of Richmond, Indiana. Most of his life was spent agricultural pursuits, but nothing could check his thirst for knowledge and while following the plow his mind was busy weaving intellectual theories, or communing with the poets, the historians and scientists.
