In 1845 Nicholaus Hoffman had his wagon shop in a log house on Main and
Sycamore, where the Mueller House now stands. Later on he moved to Wood and Main
where he did a thriving business and built himself a comfortable home. He was
born in Saxe-Meiningen, Germany on the 20th of May, 1817. He came to America
April 20th, 1839 and to Piqua 1845. He was one of the pioneer Germans of this
city always honest in his dealings, a faithful member of the Lutheran church and
an efficient wagon maker.
On the second of August, 1847, he was married here to Maria Haller, who with two
children, Gerhart Hoffman and Mrs. W. Gunther, survive him. Two years ago he was
stricken with paralysis to the right side and he has been ailing ever since.
Sunday night he was stricken the second time, the left side being affected, and
at 11:45 he passed away, quietly, as had been his life. The funeral took place
on Wednesday at two o'clock from St. Paul's church, of which he had always been
a strong supporter
