Walter T. Hughes Sr.  

PIQUA - Walter T. Hughes Sr., 86, of 105 Lakewood Place, Piqua, died Monday, March 4, 1996, at 5:25 a.m. in his residence. He was born in Columbus, on October 18, 1909, the son of the late Frank and Bessie Smith Hughes. He married Mary A. Bertling on June 18, 1933, in Piqua.  She survives. Other survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, William T. and Linda Hughes of Piqua, and Walter T. and Janette Hughes Jr. of LaVernia, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. R.J. Schilling (Alice) of Piqua; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Chet Whitson (Doris) of Haines City, Fla., and Ruth England of Piqua. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Greene Street United Methodist Church, a past officer and member of the former Evening Optimist Club in Piqua, a member of the Warren Masonic Lodge 24 of Piqua, the Grand Council of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio LaFayette Council 93, he was active in the Miami County YMCA where he volunteered on many membership campaigns, he was an active volunteer for the Regional Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the Fire Marshals Association. Mr. Hughes retired Feb. 6, 1972, as assistant fire chief from the Piqua Fire Department where he worked as a firefighter since 1942.  He also was a self-employed painter and wallpaper hanger. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Greene Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James R. Christy officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home, and on Wednesday from noon until 1 p.m. in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Miami County, P.O. Box 502, Troy, Ohio,  45353, or the Piqua Ambulance Fund, care of The American Legion, 301 W. Water St., Piqua, Ohio, 45356.
