             A Tribute of Hesteor
                      by Mrs. H. F. C.

CRAMPTON, HENRY - On the death of Henry Crampton, of Company E, 8th OVVC, captured near Martinsberg, Va., July 25, 1864, died in Danville prison, January 23, 1865, aged 24 years and five months.  We will bid the noble hero farewell, for he rests in peace.

Our brother dear has gone to rest
Reclining on his Savior's breast,
In prison his sufferings are all o'er,
And now he lives to die no more.

Alas our worthy hero's fled,
His body's numbered with the dead,
Enrolled in light beyond the sun,
The weary soldier's race is run.

Dear friends our youthful brother's gone
His toils on earth are o'er,
His morning sun it set ere noon,
It set to rise no more.

Like us he bloomed in life's bright morn
Like him, we too may fade,
And ere the art of yonder's sun,
In the cold earth be laid.

His widowed mother mourns in tears,
Her dear son a early doom,
Still viewing through this vale of tears,
A rest beyond the tomb.

To him we'll bid a long farewell,
Hoping to meet again
In bright reams where angels dwell,
And there be free from pain.

Our brother kind, we'll not forget,
Nor can the grave eternal sever,
He lingers in our memories yet,
And in our hearts shall live forever.
