LOCKE, PHOEBE L. - Pleasant Hill--Fifty-five years ago, on the fourteenth of February 1856, there was born in Warren county, Ohio, Phoebe L. Whorton.  The life has been one of those so familiar to us all, a life with no striking incidents to attract the attention of others but very full of toil and yearning and suffering which meant everything to her to whom these common experiences came.  Fortune has not always smiled upon her, and sickness has done its part to make life more trying and difficult; but she met these things with no little courage and trained herself to the resignation through which hardship works out some of its sweetest lessons of patience and forbearance.  In 1885 she was married to James Locke.  To them were born five children, only one of whom still lives.  For some years their home was in Middletown, but for the past eighteen years they have lived in Dayton.  Here she united with the Memorial Presbyterian church of which she remained a member to the day of her death.  Her death occurred at the home of her sister, Mrs. W. H. Wroten, of Pleasant Hill, on Saturday evening, a few hours after her arrival from Dayton.  Funeral services were conducted Tuesday by Rev. Alva M. Kerr, and the interment was at Pleasant Hill.
