HERBET, NAOMI S. - Ludlow
Falls--The Death Angel has again entered this community and this time claimed
for its victim Miss Naomi S. Herbet, the 15-years-old daughter of John W. and
Mary Alice Herbet. Miss Naomi was a seventh grade pupil of the Ludlow
Falls school and it was while at school last Wednesday that she was taken
seriously ill. Her teacher insisted that she return to her home but she
refused to do so, thinking her condition was not serious and stayed until school
closed. She started for her home and had only gotten a short distance when
she found it impossible for her to go farther. She was taken to the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Laban Wallace where she was tenderly cared for until her father
could come for her. She was taken to her home and a physician immediately
summoned and everything was done to save her life but to no avail, death
occurring on Friday, Jan. 13th, 1911, at 12 p.m. On Friday morning
Miss Estella Fuller, a niece of Mrs. Herbet, she being a trained nurse, came to
assist them in caring for her, but all that loving hands could do was for
naught. Death was due to a severe cold which finally developed into gastro
___ritis. In November, 1906, she united with the Brethren church at
Pleasant Hill under the pastorate of Rev. J. A. Garber. She was also a
member of the Sunday school and Christian Endeavor society of that church until
last spring when she moved with her parents to the Minton farm about 1 mile
north of this village. During her short stay with us she won a host of
warm friends who greatly deplore her death. I overheard one of her
schoolmates remark that she had never seen her angry; on the reverse she was
always of a jolly disposition and ready to give you a kind word and a smile.
The high esteem in which she was held was evidenced by the many beautiful floral
tributes given. One which deserved special mention was a beautiful floral
pillow given by the Brethren Sunday school and others worthy of mention were
several large sprays from Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Minton, Mr. and Mrs. Herbet of
Dayton, one from her Sunday school class, one from the Ludlow Falls school and
one bore the card of Mrs. Dohner and daughter of Pleasant Hill. Funeral
services were held Monday, Jan. 16th, from the Brethren church at Pleasant Hill
at 10 a.m., conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. H. Ashman, assisted by Rev. Isaac
Frantz. Music by the church choir. Interment in Pleasant Hill
cemetery. She leaves to mourn her death her parents, two sisters, one
brother and one half sister. Two infant sisters preceded her in death.
The services at the church were very impressive. The church was filled to
overflowing with sorrowful friends and relatives of the bereaved family.
The Ludlow Falls school, accompanied by the three teachers, attended in a body.
The relative present from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Fuller and daughter
Estella of St. Marys, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Forbes and Charles Fuller of Lima,
Mrs. and Mrs. Ed. Herbet and son and Frank Herbet and daughter of Dayton and her
grandmother, Mrs. Susan Herbet of Pleasant Hill. The family are very
grateful to their neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted them during the
sickness and death of their daughter and sister.--Mrs. O. W. Hess.
