WALKUP, MR. RANKIN -
Mr. Rankin Walkup, a native of this county and a resident of it up to some
fourteen or fifteen years ago died suddenly at his residence in Columbus on
Monday morning last. Mr. W. was, in his younger days, a house carpenter by
trade and many of the citizens of Troy will remember him as the architect and
superintendent in the building of the Morris House here. He was a man of
excellent sense, and strict integrity; and although his political views did not
accord with those of the majority in this Senatorial district, so popular was he
personally, and so much confidence did the people repose in him, that he was
once elected to represent the district in the Ohio Senate. On the
completion of the Columbus, Piqua and Indianapolis Railroad from Piqua to
Columbus--in the construction of which he took much interest--Mr. W. removed
from Piqua to Columbus where he acted for some years as an agent for the
railroad. He afterward entered into other business there and became
prominent as one of that city's business men. Mr. Walkup was about 54
years of age, and leaves a wife, and one daughter to mourn the loss of one of
the best and kindest of husbands and fathers. His disease is said to have
been apoplexy.
