Humberger Rites Held

East Tawas—Funeral services were held Sunday from the East Tawas Methodist church for Frank L. Humberger, 75, a life-long musician and well-known band director.

Born February 27, 1884 in Galien (sic), Ohio, "Pappy" as he was known to his friends, young an old, later went to Detroit where he played with Finzel's Band, one of the most famous brass bands in the country shortly after the turn of the century. This band played on many excursion boats in the Detroit area along with becoming an integral part of opening the baseball season at Navin Field.

Later he turned to teaching, spending many years with the Troy, Ohio school system. In 1943, he retired from the Ohio post, coming to his East Tawas summer home to take over direction of the East Tawas high school music program. He and "Mammy," his wife, the late Mrs. May Humberger, who died in 1954, were popular with adults and high school students alike.

In addition to his work at the high school, the couple directed musical works at the East Tawas Methodist church, of which they were members and other instrumental and choral groups in the area.

After leaving the Tawases in 1954, he continued his life's work instructing junior high musicians in Alamo Gordo, NM until forced by illness to retire in 1959.

In May of 1957 he married the former Margaret Hobson, who survives. Other survivors include a son and daughter from his first marriage. Rev. Frank E. Humberger, pastor of the Steinson Beach Presbyterian church in Steinson Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Marie Sherman of El Paso, Tex., and five grandchildren.

Burial was Monday afternoon in the Riverside cemetery, Troy under the auspices of the Troy First Methodist Church and the Moffatt Funeral Home.
