HARTER, DR. MILTON G. - At his residence in the city of St. Louis, on the 27th of December last, after a protracted illness, Dr. Milton G. Harter, formerly of Troy, aged 55 years.  Dr. Harter was a son of Jacob D. Harter of this town, and was born in Kentucky.  He came with his parents to this county in 1820, and was brought up by his father as a farmer.  On coming of age he studied medicine, and for twenty years was a popular and successful physician.  He was an original thinker, and took nothing for granted without evidence.  Even in medicine and practice he had his own ideas.  He compounded several original remedies, which he used with great success in his practice, and afterwards manufactured them here for general sale when the business increased to such an extent that he removed to St. Louis where he could have a wider field and greater shipping facilities.  At the time of his death the business had become so large that it bid fair to soon rival that of the most extensive establishments of its kind in the United States.  Dr. Harter was an honest, candid, decided, energetic and industrious man, and esteemed most by those who knew him best.  He left no family but a wife--his only child--Mrs. Boyer and her husband both having died since the removal of the family to St. Louis.
