HEARST, MATHEW -
Peterson--Mathew Hearst was born April 13, 1840, in Lostcreek township.
His parents were William and Deborah Hearst, natives of Perry county,
Pennsylvania, who came to Miami county as pioneers and opened up the homestead
where Mathew, the sixth of nine children of the family, was born. But one
of them, Mrs. Jennie Patterson, survives him. As the youngest son it fell
to him to maintain the homestead after the other members of the family went out
to establish homes of their own. In this capacity he most faithfully
performed the duty of cheering and caring for his parents in their declining
years and finally laying them to rest in Riverside cemetery, Troy where we not
place his earthly remains. Nov. 11, 1886, he was united in marriage to
Hannah Patterson and to his union were born two children, Edith and Leon, when
she was called to her reward. Again in Jan., 1888 he was married to Miss
Mary Knouff and to them were born two children, Ada Helen, who died in infancy,
and Jennie, the youngest daughter, who is teaching school in Staunton township.
His eldest daughter, Mrs. Edith Miller, is a resident of Cincinnati,, where her
husband is preparing for the ministry. Leon, his son, following in his
father's footsteps, will maintain the homestead. Mathew Hearst, born of
Christian parents, united with the church in his early life and has been a
faithful member and an earnest worker in the cause the church of Jesus Christ
stands for. Conscientiousness and liberality have marked his religious
life. It can be said of him that he was a good man, a friend of the cause
of truth and successful in his enterprises.
