McNEAL, DR. FREDERICK B. - Dr.
Frederick B. McNeal, one of Miami county's most widely as well as most favorably
known citizens, died at his home on South Short street in Troy early Wednesday
morning, aged 70 years. Death followed a short but severe attack of
pneumonia. He was born in Concord township, October 13, 1840, and was a
son of Daniel and Barbara McNeal who came to this county from Cumberland county,
Pa. He received his education at Lindenhall Academy at New Carlisle where
he graduated in 1862. He soon entered the Union army and served as first
lieutenant of Company B, 94th O. V. I. which he was instrumental in organizing.
In 1863 he was discharged on account of disability. He returned home and
read medicine and later completed his course in the Bellevue Hospital Medical
college of New York city from which he graduated in 1867 being valedictorian of
a class of 140. After practicing in Troy a short time he went to the West
returning three years later. January 12, 1871, he was married to Miss
Martha J. Stafford of Clark county. He later removed to a farm in
Elizabeth township where he remained until about ten years ago when he removed
to Troy. He was an ardent Republican and in 1891 he was elected state
dairy and food commissioner and re-elected in 1893. His administration
practically created this very important department and he inaugurated great
reforms against tremendous opposition. He has been an active member of the
grange for many years. He was a member of the McKendra M. E. church which
he served as trustee. He was also a prominent Mason, his membership being
at New Carlisle. He was actively associated with Coleman Post G. A. R.
The funeral will be held Friday forenoon from the residence of Dr. Cook at New
Carlisle. Burial in New Carlisle cemetery. A short service will be
held from the home Thursday evening at 7 o'clock.
