Private in the 110th OVI - Then promoted to 1st Lieutenant with the Sixth Army Corps

HUBBARD, CAPT. ALBERT E. - On the 8th of March, in California, Capt. Albert E. Hubbard, of New Carlisle.  Albert, the stay and hope of his mother, volunteered as a private in the 110th O. V. I., at Piqua, and by his prompt attention to duty was promoted gradually to 1st Lieutenant.  He was with the Sixth Army Corps from Petersburgh through the terrible battles of Appomatomax C. H., and was for gallantry of service, breveited to Captain, and likewise received a Captain's commission in the Regular Army, before accepting which, he determined to solve the mystery of his father's protracted absence in the mines of California, whither he had went early in the gold excitement.  In the fall of 1865, he wrote his mother that he had found his father, broken in health; that he had determined to try the mines himself for six months, and that he would be home in the spring of 1866.  Instead of which comes the mournful intelligence that the dutiful son, the gallant soldier, the true friend, and patriot, had found a grave in the far off Pacific coast.
