McCARROLL, LAWRENCE S. - Lawrence S. McCarroll, 91, of West Milton, died March 20, 2009 at his home following a brief illness. He retired from GM/Inland in 1975. He served 31 and a half years in the military, of which five and a half years were spent in the US Army Air Corps where he served under General Dolittle during WWII in Dolittle's Raiders. The rest of his time was spent in the USAF reserves where he helped to establish the 302nd Troop Carrier Wing at the Clinton County AFB in Wilmington. He was a member of American Legion Post #8211, both in West Milton. Lawrence graduated from the Palmer Chiropractic School and practiced in West Alexandria for 10 years during the 1950s. He was also a volunteer firefighter in West Alexandria, a member of the West Milton Police Department and then the Miami County Sheriff's Department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma (Wysong) McCarroll; an infant son, Lawrence III; his parents, Lawrence and Josephine (Dettman) McCarroll; and sister, Helen Robinson. He is survived by seven children, Nancy and Terry O'Connell, Connie Jo McCarroll, Bonnie and Edward Geiger, Michael McCarroll, Larry and Frankie McCarroll, Jim and Anna McCarroll, Robert and Diane McCarroll; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held March 24 at the Gilbert-Fellers Funeral Home, Brookville, with Rev. Joanne Stearns officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in Sugar Grove Cemetery, West Alexandria. In lieu of Flowers the family requests donations to Hospice of Dayton or American Legion Post 487.
