HAWTHORNE, ALFA - Special Dispatch to the Times -
Sad Accident at Hamilton - Miss Alfa Hawthorne, a Well Known Young Lady,
Crushed to Death by the Cars - Hamilton, Nov. 10.--This morning, at
7:25, a most distressing accident occurred to a well-known young lady of
this city, Miss Alfa Hawthorne, which resulted in the loss of her life. She
was on her way to the depot to take the Chicago express south, and within
half a square of her home, when she turned down the railroad track, that
being the nearest route. There is only eighteen inches or two feet between
a high board fence and the track upon which the Chicago train runs at the
point she turned, and when she did so the engine was within fifty feet of
her. The engineer whistled and applied the air brakes, but it was too
late. The engine struck her, jamming her up against the fence, when she
rolled down and under the wheels, her left leg being horribly crushed and
the right badly hurt. She also sustained other internal injuries. Drs.
Talbot and Walton were called in, and did all that medical skill could to
relieve her sufferings, but she died at 8:30 o'clock. It was a sad affair,
for she is the only and idolized daughter of a widowed mother, and the
mother reached the scene on the track before her child was taken from under
the wheels. Miss Hawthorne, better known here as "Allie", had many friends
in Troy who were shocked to hear of her untimely death and the shocking
manner in which it was received. She was the daughter of the late W. T.
Hawthorne, for a number of years principal of the Grammar Department of our
Union School. The news of the accident caused much sadness here, and the
terribly bereaved mother has the heartfelt sympathy of a large circle of
friends and acquaintances.
