CULBERTSON, HENRY W. - Obituary - Henry W. Culbertson, who departed this
life on the 28th ultimo, was born near Chambersburg, Penn., February 22nd, 1797.
In 1803 his parents moved to Ohio and took up residence at Dayton, Henry while
there learning the Saddlery and Harness trade with Col. Reed. While with
Col. R. he was a bearer of dispatches to General Harrison at Cincinnati in 1812.
On returning from the trip he volunteered to go to Ft. Wayne and relieve
his brother, Jos. Culbertson, who was on duty there, on account of sickness in
his family. On the 25th of February 1819 he was married to Mrs. Marie
Coleman, sister of the late Dr. Asa Coleman, of Troy. He was connected
with most all of the public improvements which were made in this locality during
the earlier portion of his life, as surveyor of the old State Road,
locating the D. & M. R. R. etc. and for many years was one of the leading
merchants of Troy. On the day of Mr. Culbertson's funeral we heard a
gentleman remark, who had come to Troy with his parents just 49 years ago, that
Mr. C. was the last survivor of all the married men in Troy at that time.
