MATCHETT, EDWIN LINDSAY - In Greenville, on Sunday morning
last, of lingering consumption, Edwin Lindsay Matchett, eldest son of Dr.
Wm. H. and Ella Matchett, aged about 23 years. The deceased was a young man
of much promise. Possessing a brilliant intellect, and remarkably studious
habits, he excelled most boys of his age in scholarship. After receiving a
good common school education at home, and preparing himself otherwise for a
College course, he entered Cornell University in 1874, where he made many
friends by his urbane manners and gentlemanly deportment, and rapid progress
by his diligence in study, and from which had he continued in health he
would have graduated this year. His rather delicate constitution, however,
soon gave way under the too great mental pressure, and he was compelled to
relinquish his studies and return to his home, where he has been gradually
wearing away with pulmonary consumption, hoping the best and fearing the
worst--as is usual in such cases--until Sunday morning last when, as above
stated, his young life ceased, his earthly career closed, and the pride and
hope of loving friends were consigned to the place appointed for all living,
and to which all, old and young, must sooner or later, depart.
