Miami Union         Veteran - Company A, 440 OVI, then changed to 8th OVC

November 25, 1876

YOUART, COLONEL ROBERT - Colonel Robert Youart, formerly of Troy, and well known to a large number of the readers of the Union, died at his home in Perry County on Monday night last, of consumption, a disease which has been preying upon his constitution for years, and which he has resisted with an almost iron will.  For the past eight or ten years Col. Youart has been engaged in coal mining in the Hocking Valley, and at the time of his death resided at New Straitsville where he had, within the last year or so, opened a new mine which was just in successful operation.  Although failing in health rapidly for the past six months he insisted on going to his office each day, showing a determination to fight the dread disease to the last.  So his death though not unexpected, was sudden.  Col. Youart was a member of the 44th O. V. I.  He first served as 1st Lieut. of Company "A" and was afterwards promoted to Captain.  Shortly after the changing of the 44th O. V. I. to the 8th O. V. C., he was promoted to Major and afterwards to Lt. Col., which position he held until his Regiment was mustered out at the close of the war.  He returned home and spent several years in energetic efforts to build up Troy--doing that which was a great blessing to the town--erecting quite a number of good substantial dwelling houses.  A portion of the Texas portion of Troy bears the name of "Youart Town" from the number of houses built by Col. Youart.  Within the last two years he has had another tract of land in the west portion of town laid off into lots and put on the market, but his declining health prevented him from giving them much attention.  His death is not only a loss to his family, but a loss to the locality in which he lived, and a loss to Troy in which he took a great interest.  A wife and one child survive him.
