COATE, MAX - Piqua - Max Coate, 85, of Piqua and formerly of Laura, passed away in his home Friday, Aug. 22, 2008.  Coate was born May 1, 1923, in Laura to the late Chester and Elsie (Mowry) Coate. He attended Pleasant Hill School.  He retired after more than 40 years of service with the Hobart Corp., Troy.  He served on the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department in his earlier years.  He married Evelyn (Wackler) Bell on July 26, 1971, in Laura and they shared more than 37 years of marriage together.  Max was doubly blessed when he married Evelyn.  He had two stepchildren that he was very fond of and became grandpa and great-grandpa shortly after.  Max and Evelyn enjoyed traveling together, the camping trips with the grandkids and fishing.  He was a member of the Troy Baptist Temple, Troy.  He will be missed and remembered by his wife and best friend, Evelyn Coate of Piqua; stepdaughters and son-in-law, Barbara Dearth of Sidney, and Melodie Sue and Vennard Vorhees of Piqua; stepson and daughter-in-law, E. Michael and Heather Bell of Piqua; nine step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandkids; brothers, Jerry Coate of Pleasant Hill and Dale Coate of San Diego, Calif.; extended family and friends; and his little schnauzer and faithful companion, Buster.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Elsie, sister, Jean Argabright, and brother, Bud Coate.  Funeral services to celebrate his life were held Tuesday in the Jackson Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, with the Rev. Chris Williams officiating.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.  Contributions if so desired can be made to Hospice of Miami County.  Condolences also may be expressed to www.jacksonfuneralhomes.
