MITCHELL, DAVID ANDERSON
- Piqua - David Anderson Mitchell,
one of the oldest residents of this city, died shortly after 6 o'clock
Monday morning at his home on Caldwell Street after suffering an illness of
a week. A complication of diseases directly caused his death. For the past
nine years he had been totally blind, but despite his loss of eyesight he
was cheerful, a state which had characterized his entire life. He never
complained of his misfortune. The deceased was born in Hamilton County on
August 11th, 1823, and was 89 years, 4 months, and 11 days old. In 1837,
when he was but 14 years of age, he came to Piqua with his parents. Several
years later he entered into the saddler's business. He was married in 1849
to Anna Candliss and for 61 years this couple were spared to each other.
Three years ago Mrs. Mitchell died and since her passing her husband had
never been quite the same, and he constantly grieved over his loss. When he
came to Piqua there were only a few houses composing the village and he
witnessed the passing of the village into the city. Despite his advanced
age, his mind was bright and until a few hours before he passed away he was
able to speak to the loved ones gathered about his bedside. He is survived
by three children. They are Mrs. J. F. Mitchell and Mrs. Mary Grosvenor of
this city and Mrs. Lillie Ziegenfelder of Troy. The funeral services were
held at the late residence Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted under
the auspices of the Baptist Church with which he affiliated. Interment was
in Forest Hill Cemetery.
