BOILER EXPLOSION

(Newspaper clipping)

Tuesday afternoon about 3:00 P.M. a terrible accident occurred by a boiler explosion on the farm of William Key of Perry Township in which Norman Key and son William Key, Henry Herring, William Walcott, Harley Mills, Mrs. William Key, Frank Starrett and E. K. Anderson were hurt, some of them very seriously.

Tuesday morning the above persons went happily to work on the farm of Mr. Key to saw wood, an old engine belonging to Henry Herring which had done its best service running a threshing machine was the power used. At the hour mentioned without a moments notice a terrific explosion occurred spreading terrible havoc around it. The boiler was thrown a distance of yards stripping itself of everything except the steam chest and gauge which did not even have the glass broken. Fragments of iron are scattered in every direction. The boiler made three bounds and completely turned over. At the first bound the fly wheel was torn off and thrown a distance of over 100 feet at the same time the hard frozen ground was torn up for a distance of 25 feet to the depth of two feet.

Norman Key had his right arm broken above the elbow. He also had a wound on the head, with a number of bruises and injuries which it is feared are dangerous.

His son William Key also had his arm broken near the shoulder. The injury to the arm is more than an ordinary break. One rib was broken besides the face being burned. His injuries it is feared are fatal.

Mrs. William Key was badly scalded below the knees. She was out after some wood at the time of the accident. Harry Herring was so badly scalded that the skin came off his arms and legs when his clothing was removed. The flesh came off in several pieces it is reported. It is feared that he sustained internal injuries as he was thrown quite a distance. He gave a very accurate description of the accident. William Key was scalded and his face and arms -------(not legible)--------.

Surgeons were immediately summoned from the towns of Maplewood, Quincy and Pemberton, everything possible being done to relieve the sufferers.
